Paris, France

Robyn and Charlie landed in Paris without delaying the victorious return of Charles de Gaulle or any other French big-shot. On the other hand, an airport official wanted to charge them for providing a hangar space. Full rate, too. No discounts for saving either their country or their backsides.

Charlie was tempted to ask if all the American soldiers and airmen in Europe should depart tout de suite. Maybe leave the Germans to think they should give the conquest of Europe just one more try. Robyn prevented any international discord by taking the man off to one side and whispering entreaties to him.

She must have said the magic word — or several of them — because the next thing Charlie saw was the guy making lengthy notes on a pad he’d taken out of a pocket. For a moment, it looked like he wanted to buss Robyn on both cheeks. Only she put a hand up, and he contented himself with a bow.

Robyn returned to Charlie and linked her arm with his.

“I didn’t see any money change hands,” he said, “so how’d you grease the wheel?”

Robyn was so pleased with herself she kissed Charlie — on the cheek, the precedent having been set. “Oh, there was quite a handsome amount of money exchanged.”

Having learned quite a few tricks in that area over the past four years, Charlie replied, “Just not cash.”

“Not at the moment, but soon enough.”

“The money will be wired from abroad?”

“Yes.”

“From an SOE account?”

Robyn shook her head. “That would commence a struggle longer than The Hundred Years’ War. As long as there were bureaucrats in London and heirs in my family, the battle for repayment would never end.”

“Okay, then whose money did you just give away?” He’d no sooner asked the question than the answer came to him. “Your mother’s?”

“Yes.”

“That won’t cause problems for your father, too?”

Robyn smiled and shook her head. “The two of them quite sensibly keep their money in separate countries and discussions of their politics on opposite sides of the Irish Sea.”

Charlie almost asked if that was where Robyn got her ideas about what constituted a marriage, but she seemed happy at the moment, and he wanted her to stay that way while they were working together.

He certainly didn’t want to know about the older generation’s sexuality.

Instead, he stuck to what was pertinent. “So, have you arranged for a place where we can stay in town?”

“A lovely flat in the Latin Quarter, I was told.”

“And if it’s not what it’s cracked up to be?”

“Well, I also mentioned that you are an American assassin, and it wouldn’t do to anger you.”

Charlie rolled his eyes and asked, “You paid the guy enough money not to go to the local cops with that story? He’d didn’t ask why I’m wearing a U.S. Army uniform?”

“A disguise, I told him, and Americans are in quite the good graces here as you might imagine. How long that might last, who can say? Besides, I told him you were hunting for a fugitive Nazi.
